Associate Editor – BES journals

We are looking for active ecological researchers to join the Editorial Boards of Functional Ecology, Journal of Animal Ecology, Journal of Applied Ecology, Journal of Ecology and Methods in Ecology and Evolution.

Selection criteria:

  • An active researcher with a PhD in a field relevant to the journal scope
  • Strong publication record for current career stage
  • Experience of refereeing
  • Expertise in relevant subject areas within the scope of the journal

Though previous editorial experience is desirable, we encourage early career scientists to apply even if they have not previously worked as an editor.

Key responsibilities:

  • Making initial assessments of the suitability of manuscripts
  • Selecting appropriate peer reviewers
  • Making recommendations to the Senior Editor on the basis of reviews received and your own professional opinion
  • Assist editorial team to identify papers for further promotion via video, podcasting and the media
  • Contributing to initiatives such as journal-specific and cross-journal Virtual Issues and Special Features
  • Acting as an ambassador for the journal at conferences and engaging with the journal through blogs and social media, as appropriate

Associate Editors are entitled to free personal access to the journal, one free colour image in the journal per year, and free registration to the BES Annual Meeting every year. In addition to this, you will receive a year’s free membership to the BES, with a 50% discount for subsequent years. Full details of BES membership benefits can be found here.

Each journal is seeking subject experts in different topics, as listed below.

To apply, please complete this online form. You will be asked to upload a CV and provide a brief statement on why you would like to become an Associate Editor. You will be asked to select a primary journal for your application, but you will also be able to express your interest in being considered for more than one journal.

The BES values the benefits that diversity brings.  We seek to create an inclusive culture and welcome applications from all sectors of society and from any geographic region.

Functional Ecology
Functional Ecology publishes high-impact papers that enable a mechanistic understanding of ecological pattern and process from the organismic to the ecosystem scale (full aims and scope).

We are looking for applicants with expertise in any area of the scope but will give preference to those with interests as follows:

  • Plant–animal interactions
  • Root traits
  • Decomposition
  • Plant traits
  • Animal functional traits
  • Immunoecology
  • Food webs
  • Oxidative stress
  • Metabolic scaling
  • Thermal biology
  • Nutritional ecology

Journal of Animal Ecology
Journal of Animal Ecology publishes the best animal ecology research that develops, tests and advances broad ecological principles (full aims and scope). We are looking for applications from those with expertise in the following areas:

  • Food webs
  • Trophic interactions
  • Community ecology
  • Movement and migration
  • Habitat and resource use
  • Nutrition
  • Invasive species
  • Disease
  • Macroecology and biogeography
  • Marine ecosystems
  • Agroecology

Journal of Applied Ecology
Journal of Applied Ecology publishes novel, high-impact papers on the interface between ecological science and the management of biological resources (full aims and scope). Please note, this journal ran open calls in 2015 and 2016 and the Senior Editors are seeking applications in a limited number of specific subject areas:

  • Disease and pathogen ecology, including disease vectors and zoonoses
  • Benthic and coastal ecosystem function and restoration
  • Insect dynamics and forest management
  • Connections between ecological theory and restoration

Journal of Ecology
Journal of Ecology publishes original articles on all aspects of the ecology of plants (including algae), in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, that carry strong and ecological messages and advance our understanding of ecological principles (full Aims and Scope). We are particularly seeking applicants with expertise in the following areas:

  • Global change ecology
  • Forest ecology
  • Community ecology in arid ecosystems
  • Functional traits and phylogenetics in community ecology
  • Statistical ecology

Ecologists based anywhere in the world can apply, but we are especially looking to recruit more board members from China and India.

Methods in Ecology and Evolution
Methods in Ecology and Evolution promotes the development of new methods in ecology and evolution, and facilitates their dissemination and uptake by the research community, bringing together papers from previously disparate sub-disciplines to provide a single forum for tracking methodological developments in all areas. (full Aims and Scope). We are particularly looking for applicants with expertise in the following areas:

  • Evolution (especially evolutionary developmental biology, phenotypic evolution,  quantitative genetics)
  • Field biology (especially camera traps, acoustic monitoring)
  • Paleobiology and macroevolution
  • Conservation biology (especially eDNA)
  • Marine ecology (especially acoustic monitoring)
  • Movement ecology (especially stable isotopes)
  • Physiology (especially metabolomics)
